Student opinions

Lauren Mortimer, BA Geography, 2nd Year

I am currently a second year BA Geography student at Manchester . I really love my course, the university and the city and I am so glad I chose to come here! The university has a really good reputation and the geography department is one of the best in the country. The Geography open and taster day really helped make my decision, as the students were all so knowledgeable and all of the lecturers seemed so friendly and personable. Since being at the university, I feel totally at home here. Everyone is so friendly in the department, from the lecturers to the librarians. Whenever I have a query or problem, they are all more than happy to help. I am really enjoying my time in Manchester . The city is buzzing, the nightlife and shopping are amazing! Fallowfield is great too, a proper student village! I don't want to leave although when I do I'm hoping to go into postgraduate study or maybe marketing.

Rachel Kempson, BSc Geography, 2nd Year

I've enjoyed every moment of university so far! I came on a Geography discipline open day and taster day and really felt that Manchester was the right choice and both students and lecturers alike made a real impression on me! I think the Geography department at Manchester is fantastic as it has many lecturers who specialise in a broad number of fields. This allows you a greater choice of subjects and to tailor your degree to how you would like and what really interests you! The lecturers are approachable and friendly and this creates a good, relaxed working environment. The social life at university is also great, and Geography is an amazingly social and friendly subject where everyone knows everyone! I am hoping to leave Manchester with a 2:1 and hopefully go on to do Postgraduate Study to further my interests! I feel that the degree I will leave Manchester with has definitely provided me with not only with knowledge of the subject from an excellent university but with fundamental employable skills needed for the world of work .

Peter Vlahos, BA Geography, 2nd Year

Having grown up in Manchester , I was unsure about staying within the region to go to university. I now know, however, that it was definitely the right choice! I remember coming to a open day and taster day in the department, and thought the idea of having your own school library, own laboratories and own ICT facilities under one roof was fantastic.

Another aspect to the course here is the residential fieldtrip to Keswick. Again, I don't believe any other department would be able to offer a weekend away even before you start your first year to get to know everyone (and I mean everyone!) in your year. You will have the chance to join MUGS which organises all the socials for Geography – it all kicks off with a session of pub golf during Fresher's – we do loads throughout the year as well.

You will soon discover how approachable all the staff are – by email, phone and specific office hours.

The University campus as a whole is located only 5 minutes from the city centre by bus and 10 minutes by bus to the 'student village' of Fallowfield – any student is in a great location.

Bethan Crossen, BA Geography, 2nd Year

The University of Manchester was my first choice of University for a number of reasons. Manchester 's reputation was one, but at a Geography Taster Day I was also impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff and students, and the resources that would be available to me.

The city of Manchester itself was an attraction because of the large student community and the opportunity to live in the heart of it. Manchester also has a great live music scene and a variety of clubs to suit all tastes.

The course involves not only lectures and tutorials but lab sessions, computer skills and careers work. There's a real emphasis put on transferable skills, which I've found really useful.

Highlights have been the pre-registration fieldtrip to Keswick and first year team work around Manchester. The MUGS socials always provide a good time too.

After finishing my degree I hope to go on to work in consultancy.

Robert James Duckworth, MLPM, 4th Year

I decided to take the MLPM course because it looked interesting, fun and diverse. Being in my final year, I am expecting to be snapped up by an employer soon as they are looking for the skills that the course has given me. The course has been very enjoyable and the teaching level is unrivalled, with excellent student support when needed, either by fellow students or by the lecturers themselves. I hope to leave the University at the end of the year with a good 2:1 and start in a profession that I will want to do for a long time to come.
