Services and facilities
Our School is comprised of outstanding staff with a strong commitment to both research and teaching.
As such, our students benefit from being taught by people who are internationally-recognised in their field but who also believe that it is important to nurture future leaders.
All our students are supported in their learning by an identified academic advisor for their period of study. During a programme of regular meetings, academic advisors provide pastoral and work-related advice and guidance intended to help students make the most of their degree programme and the opportunities it presents.
The School of Environment and Development is housed in the state-of-the-art Arthur Lewis Building, built in 2007 and located at the heart of the University Campus. The building is equipped with a study space, modern research laboratories and a coffee bar, and the John Rylands Library, one of the best-resourced academic libraries in the country, is just a short walk away. In addition, students also have access to the Kantorowich Library, a specialist library that houses the Geography and Planning collections.
Increasingly, much of the reading material students need to access is available on-line through e-journals, and all our undergraduate courses use blackboard, a virtual learning environment that allows students to study on-line using material created by the lecturers, download papers or access relevant audio-visual material.
Computer facilities are provided to access this material in libraries and in some halls of residence, and access can be gained remotely too, which is particularly useful during vacation periods! In addition to these general computer facilities, the School also houses a number of computer clusters with a range of general and subject specific software such as Microsoft Office, ArcView, AutCAD, and 3D StudioMax. Wireless access to the internet is available in most University buildings.
