Social Movements and Poverty in Peru and South Africa
Part of the School of Environment and Development

Workshops

Country workshops with participation of social movement leaders, activists and researchers will be held to discuss the accuracy and implications of the maps of social movements developed in the first phase of the research, modify our framework on the basis of the mapping, identify conceptual and empirical gaps and begin discussing cases for in-depth study oriented at RQ2 and RQ3. A characterization of regime context will be required. These workshops have been held on July and August 2008 in Peru and South Africa (see Peru report PDF, 65KB - South Africa report PDF, 29KB). (For the complete report on the mapping of social movements in Peru, click here PDF, 627KB).

A second workshop will discuss the material generated, and its relationship to the national map and analytical framework. The workshop will involve leaders of case study movements, other leaders and activists, researchers and state officials.

A UK workshop with researchers will be held later, to discuss findings and open up the area as one of further collaboration among UK based researchers.
