On September 3rd, 2009 Tony Bebbington was invited to speak to Tematisk Forum, a network of Danish civil society organisations working with development aid. This was the first in a series of seminars on civil society in development aid that the Forum has organized for its members. He was asked to speak on "Civil society organisations/NGOs in development ? (in search of) how to bring about real social change".


On August 19th, Tony Bebbington, Martin Scurrah and Claudia Bielich led a seminar to discuss the preliminary results of the second phase of the research in Peru. The seminar was held in the Lima offices of our partners, the Centro Peruano de Estudios Sociales. Participants included participants from the three case studies: the indigenous movement and conflicts over petroleum development in Rio Corrientes; the human rights movements and post-conflict reparations; and the urban popular women's movements and nutritional initiatives in Lima.
Also present were representatives from: the Ombudsman's Office; the Programme for Democracy and Global Transformation; the Centre for Labour Advisory Services, Law, Environment and Natural Resources; the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos among others. On August 12th, at the biennial conference of the Permanent Seminar on Agrarian Research (SEPIA), Tony Bebbington was asked to be commentator on the keynote presentation on the topic of Social and socio-environmental conflicts in the rural sector. SEPIA is the main forum for the discussion of rural research in Peru. The conference was held in Cusco, Peru from August 10th to 14th, 2009.

In Spring 2009 Tony Bebbington was asked by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) to prepare a background paper on Poverty Reduction and Social Movements for UNRISD's forthcoming flagship report on Poverty. This paper will soon be available here.


The Latin American Center for Social Ecology (CLAES) and the partnership University of Manchester–CEPES co-organized the workshop "Relationships between civil society and governments". The event was held in the Faraona Grand Hotel in Lima, Perú on July 25th. The workshop aimed to share information and analysis about the relationships between NGOs, social movements and governments in Latin America.

The debate was chaired by Martin Scurrah from CEPES and Gerardo Honty from CLAES (Uruguay). Participants from five Latin American countries attended the event.


On May 11-13 Martin Scurrah presented a "Panorama of organizations and social movements in Peru" in the panel Civil Society, Organizations and social movements at the workshop organized by Broederlijk Delen to define its new multiannual program of intervention in Peru. The meeting aimed to analyze the context in which the departments of Apurimac, Cusco and Puno are developing. It was held at the Andean College in Cusco, Peru. Martin Scurrah participated in the panel on "Balance and challenges of the indigenous movement in Peru" in the first meeting of the National Committee for Thematic Programmes of IBIS Perú. He gave the presentation "Balance and challenges of social movements in Peru". The meeting was held in the Chalet de Chorrillos School on November 26th. (See the presentation here, PDF 339KB)


Martin Scurrah and Claudia Bielich gave the presentation "Responses and perspectives of social movements in contemporary Peru" at CONACAMI's annual meeting for formulating its operational plan for 2009. The meeting was held in Lima on November 7th. (See the presentation here, PDF 320KB-Spanish)


Martin Scurrah gave an openning presentation at the Regional Meeting of Lutheran World Relief. He presented the work in Peru to lead a discussion about the future of aid and the challenges of the new funding scenarios. The meeting was held in Lima on October 21st.


Martin Scurrah commented the opening presentation “La mina: Crisol de identidades, cuna de mestizajes y fuente de conflictos” given by Dr Carmen Salazar in the Peruvian-French Seminar on “Mining: Rights, Politic Institutions and Identity in the Andes". The seminar was organized by the Democracy and Human Rights Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Perú, the French Cooperation Agency for Andean Countries and the French Institute of Andean Studies. It was held in Lima, Perú, on October 1-2.


Martin Scurrah and Claudia Bielich introduced the study "Mapping of Social Movements in Peru" on September 2nd at the weekly meeting of CONVEAGRO in Lima. (See the video here).


During July and August workshops were held in South Africa and Peru to discuss the first drafts of the documents mapping social movements and movement-poverty linkages across the two countries. Workshop participants came from social movement organizations, NGOs, academia and research institutes.


In Peru an additional workshop was held to discuss the draft documents with CONVEAGRO, the national coordinator and agrarian organizations. Reports on the South Africa and Peru workshops can be found here. (Peru report PDF, 65KB - South Africa report PDF, 29KB).

Martin Scurrah gave a presentation on Civil Society and Political Society in the international seminar "Encrucijadas y Alternativas para la Sociedad Civil en la Nueva Globalización”, held in Lima on June 5-6 and organized by the Centro Latinoamericano de Ecología Social (CLAES) y la Red Peruana por una Globalización con Equidad (RedGE).


The book 'Defiendo Derechos y Promoviendo Cambios:El Estado. Las Empresas Extractivas y las Comunidades Locales en el Perú' was launched at the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, Lima, on January 30th.
