MARC launch & SED annual lecture
MARC enjoyed a highly successful launch on Friday 5th October with a drinks reception in the mammals gallery at the Manchester Museum with a speech by the Dean of Humanities Alistair Ulph followed by the main event, a special lecture by Professor Bruno Latour of Sciences Po in Paris.
Professor Latour has been professor at Ecole des Mines de Paris (1982-2006), a visiting professor at UCSD, LSE and Harvard University. He is the author of an extensive list of agenda setting articles and books. He was awarded the Bernal Prize in 1992 and the Prix Roberval du Livre et de la Communication grand public (for his book Aramis ou l’amour des techniques) in 1992. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Lund, Sweden (1996) and the University of Lausanne (2006), and had the Spinoza Chair at the University of Amsterdam in 2005.
Professor Latour’s lecture asked if there can be “A Cosmopolitically Correct Design”, drawing upon the ideas of the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, an interview with whom Professor Latour distributed and is available as a pdf on this site.
On Saturday 6th October Professor Latour joined MARC researchers for an informal workshop to discuss our emerging research agenda across a range of projects including a newly funded EU Project ‘MACOSPOL’ led by Professor Latour with MARC as a partner. The project will explore approaches to mapping scientific controversies, with MARC focusing in architectural controversies.
