Invitation to a one day consultative workshop sponsored by Transparency International (UK) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute, University of Manchester
Aid, Poverty and Corruption Workshop
14 March 2008
Brooks World Poverty Institute
To be held at Hulme Hall, University of Manchester.
There will be a one-day workshop on 14th March, at Hulme Hall, University of Manchester. The workshop is being jointly convened by Transparency International (UK) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute. The event is designed as a consultative and participatory exercise on the future effectiveness of UK development aid, with speakers already confirmed for two panel discussions and three breakout groups. We are now opening the Workshop to interested members of the University and public, and suggest that you contact the Workshop Coordinator, sarah.bracking@manchester.ac.uk in order to book one of the remaining places. We have only 80 places available, so book now to avoid disappointment.
Speakers in both the plenary and breakout sessions will frame broad questions in introductory presentations in order to facilitate discussion. Please come with questions and a willingness to participate. The Workshop is free and includes lunch. As spaces are limited, if you accept our invitation and then find you cannot attend, please tell the Workshop Coordinator immediately so that someone from our reserve list can be notified. Because of pressure of time there is not a booking form for this Workshop: just email with ‘I would like to attend TI-BWPI’ in the address line. We will send you joining details nearer the time.
Purpose of workshop
The UK has made commitments to significantly increase its official development assistance to low-income countries, especially in Africa, and to promote ownership of aid by recipient countries. At the same time, in order to ensure that increased aid flows achieve their intended development results, the Government is committed to helping to strengthen governance and anti-corruption efforts in recipient countries; and ensuring its own policies and the actions of UK companies do not contribute to the problem of corruption. There is a need for greater dialogue in key constituencies in the UK, including the academic community, on the linkage between the emphasis on increased aid flows and the strengthening of the UK’s governance and anti-corruption strategy. Put simply, how can aid be made more effective in poor countries where governance is weak and corruption is deeply embedded.
Transparency International (UK) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester invite you to a workshop to discuss different dimensions of this challenge.
