The School hosts a number of externally-funded research centres which have established links with governments, multilateral agencies, NGOs and other distinguished research institutions.
Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI)
Chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz and funded by the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation, the BWPI is a multidisciplinary centre of global excellence researching poverty, poverty reduction, inequality, and growth.
Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC)
CPRC is an international partnership of universities, research institutes and NGOs, initially funded by the Department for International Development, to create knowledge that contributes to both the speed and quality of poverty reduction, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Centre for Development Informatics (CDI)
CDI is a multidisciplinary centre researching the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in socio-economic development.
Centre for Organisations in Development (COD)
COD is an interdisciplinary centre within the University of Manchester. Members of COD research organisational and management issues within the context of international development.
Centre for Urban Policy Studies (CUPS)

CURE is a multidisciplinary team committed to providing high quality research in relation to the academic agendas of sustainability, the re-building of environmental capital, and the organisation and activity of complex communities (both natural and human).
Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre (ESID)
ESID is a DfID-funded research consortium tasked with undertaking research on policies and programmes that have been successful in reducing extreme forms of poverty in specific policy areas, chosen from growth and employment, basic services, social protection, access to justice and natural resource governance.
Global Urban Research Centre (GURC)
Initially funded by the University’s Strategic Investment Fund, GURC conducts research critical urban transformations to inform urban development debates and influence policy and practice.
Improving Institutions for Pro-Poor Growth (IPPG) Programme
The 'IPPG Programme' is a shorthand name for the Research Consortium on Improving Institutions for Pro-Poor Growth, based at SED. The Project is funded by DFID , with £2.5 million being awarded over five years from September 2005 until August 2010.
Manchester Architecture Research Centre (MARC)
Research in MARC is intrinsically inter-disciplinary and is broadly conceived, encompassing, urban design, urban development, ecological and landscape design and the conservation and management of historic environments.
