The School of Environment and Development (SED) is a major centre for postgraduate education on issues relating to society, the economy and the environment.
SED offers over 30 postgraduate taught degrees (Masters) and postgraduate research degrees (PhD) and currently hosts in excess of 400 Masters students and 100 PhD students from across the globe.

PhD in Architecture
Our Architecture postgraduate research programme is open to students with an interest in any aspect of architectural research, including sustainable urbanism, urban design and development, socio-technical systems (particularly in relation to sustainable energy technologies), places and place-making, ecological and landscape design and the conservation and management of historic environments.
PhD in Urban and Regional Planning
The School's Planning and Landscape unit welcomes postgraduate research proposals relating to planning theory and practice, including environmental planning and management, environmental impact assessment, sustainability and environmental governance, diversity and multi-functional landscapes, ecologically informed design and planning, spatial planning systems, urban regeneration and renewal, urban design and the public realm, and local and regional economic development.
PhD in International Development
The Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) provides an excellent environment for postgraduate research relating to international development issues, including poverty, inequality and well-being;governance, institutions and human security; environment and development; social theory and social development; enterprise, technology and finance; development informatics; organisational change for development, and global urban development.
PhD in Human and Physical Geography
Our Geography postgraduate research programme is open to students wishing to undertake both theoretical and policy-relevant research in Physical Geography, including environmental systems and landscapes, quaternary environments and geoarchaeology; and Human Geography, including geographical political economy and studies on the complexity of social, cultural and spatial relations.
