School of Environment and Development

Services and facilities

The School of Environment and Development strives to create a positive and supportive environment in which students can develop. As part of that aim we offer a variety of services to support students academically and pastorally.

Pastoral care

Students on the Masters' courses will each be assigned a personal tutor who has a special interest in the Masters degree.

Research degree students have two members of staff who take personal tutorial responsibilities; a supervisor and a second supervisor.

The School has a system of Personal Development Plans (PDP) available for students to use to monitor and plan their academic and personal skills development.

They are designed to prompt reflection and raise awareness of the skills students have developed through their studies and elsewhere by:

Computing

Networked computers are available for student use in:

As email is the prime means of communication between staff and students, all students are given a personal email account which is accessible both on and off campus.

Students may also set up their own web page on a University file-server to develop and publish their academic work.

Libraries

Students have full access to the university's Rylands Library, one of the four principal academic libraries in the UK and an official depository for European Union and United Nations documents. It is complemented by the School's own library provision, as well as other departmental libraries to which postgraduate students have full access and borrowing rights.

Inter-library loans can be arranged for postgraduate students if a particular book is not available in the Manchester libraries. The inter-library loans service can also be used to obtain books from another library in Britain or overseas.
