Student profiles

Richard Pawson, PhD Geography (past student)

Why did you choose to study for your PhD?
I really enjoyed independent research and project work during my undergraduate study. This was particularly so during my dissertation. As such, the prospect of continuing this type of work for three years in a subject area that already interested me was a real attraction.

Why did you choose to study at The University of Manchester?
I studied my undergraduate degree also at Manchester. Both the quality of the working environment at the university and the city itself attracted me to stay on for 3 more years.

What are the best things about your course so far?
By far the best thing about being a PhD student (in my opinion!) is the independence given to you from the off. As of day 1 I was in complete control of my time, resources and the direction of my research project. To me, it felt like I was acting as my own ‘boss’ straight out of undergraduate study.

How long have you been a student at the University?
In total I have been a student at Manchester for 5 ½ years now. I started my undergraduate degree in September 2001 and aim to submit my thesis at the end of this academic year.

What are you hoping to do in the future? How will your course set you up for this?
I hope to work in the environment sector; either in consultancy or an organisation such as the Environment Agency – I certainly want to utilise the research skills and environmental knowledge I have gained further into my career.

Is the School of Environment and Development a good place to work?
Yes, for many reasons but particularly if you are an environmental researcher as we move soon to brand new, state-of-the-art laboratories….if only I was starting my PhD this September!

Peter Quartey, PhD IDPM (2002)

Why did you choose to study for your PhD?
In order to upgrade my research skills and better understand development economics.

Why did you choose to study at The University of Manchester?
The University of Manchester has a unique location, population size and offers a welcoming environment for the international student.

What were the best things about your course?
It combines teaching with Seminars and above all it integrates ICT into the curriculum. Besides, I met other students with similar backgrounds which enabled us share our experiences.

When were you a student at the University?
1998-2002.

What are you now working on now? How do you feel that your course set you up for this?
I am currently a research fellow with the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research and I do 75% research, 25% teaching at the Masters level.  The course has prepared me to deliver both functions in a professional and timely manner.

Did you find the School of Environment and Development a good place to work?
An excellent environment for work with modern academic facilities and has staff with diverse background.
