Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2012
The School of Environment and Development welcomes applications from candidates of the highest academic calibre wishing to undertake a postgraduate research degree starting in session 2012/13.
The best candidates amongst those who apply will be put forward for partial or full funding under a variety of schemes available to the School, ranging from the ESRC Northwest Doctoral Training College scheme and other externally funded national and international schemes (e.g. EPSRC, NERC), to internally funded schemes such as the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI) and Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) scholarship schemes.
Eligibility
The scholarships are mainly open to full- or part-time UK/EU students but some studentships are also available to international students.
For international students, the school will also consider matching funding secured from other international funding sources.
The scholarships are open to candidates to any of our four doctoral programmes: Architecture, Geography, International Development (IDPM) and Planning.
Selection
Applicants are expected to have a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or its international equivalent), and a relevant postgraduate qualification (generally a Masters degree) with an average grade of 65% (or its international equivalent) and 65% in the dissertation.
Short listing will be based on students' academic achievement to date, a robust and comprehensive research proposal and a topic in the mainstream research interests of the School’s academic staff.
How to Apply
The first step is to apply for a place on one of our PhD programmes, and be offered a place on the programme.
If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, you should then download and complete the application form below, within which you will need to supply a 1500-word, detailed research proposal (in addition to the one submitted for a place on the course).
Please submit the form in Word format only (i.e. no PDFs please) to Monique Brown, Postgraduate Research (PGR) Admissions Coordinator, at pgr-sedfunding@manchester.ac.uk. Please use the email subject box to indicate which funding you are applying for.
Application Deadlines
Decisions under this scheme will be made on a rolling basis as and when applications are received and funding schemes (internal or external) become available.
The latest date for application is Friday 2 March 2012 at 12.00 GMT, but note that you wil need to already have a place on one of our PhD programmes by then, and that some of the external funding opportunities to which this scheme connects may also have already closed by then. Early application is therefore strongly advised.
If you have any enquiries regarding your application, please contact Monique Brown, PGR Admissions Coordinator at pgr-sedfunding@manchester.ac.uk or on tel. no. +44 (0) 161 275 0807.
