Specific research interests

Water-related studies form the core of Dr Richards’ research interests. In particular, she has gained expertise in the field of land use and development planning and flood risk. Her PhD examined the influences affecting local planning policy and development control decisions with implications for flood risk in England. She is currently building upon her PhD research as a Research Associate investigating the practical problems faced by local planning authorities in implementing national planning policy objectives to manage flood risk, as part of the UK Flood Risk Management Research Consortium. The project aims to inform national and local government on appropriate policy guidance and planning practice to ensure the objectives of the new, draft planning policy statement on development and flood risk are implemented effectively at the local level of planning.
