Planning Postgraduate Masters

Planning and Landscape at the University of Manchester is one of the longest established and largest professionally recognised planning schools in the UK. It is renowned internationally for its excellent teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and for the high quality of its research.

Master of Planning (MPlan)

This is a one year full-time / two year part-time professionally accredited postgraduate planning programme fully recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the full range of professional skills relevant for planning practice. Students who opt to take the MPlan programme in its 'research training' version are eligible for ESRC funding.

MA Environmental Impact Assessment and Management (MA EIAM)

A one year full-time / two year part-time specialist programme providing training in environmental assessment and management, accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under their Environment specialism, and by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a specialist Masters programme.

MA Urban Regeneration and Development (MA URD)

A one year full-time / two year part-time specialist programme aimed at developing intellectual and professional skills for practice in urban regeneration and development, accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under their Planning and Development (P&D) specialism, and by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a specialist Masters programme.

Staff in Planning and Landscape also contribute to the School's MSc in Global Urban Development Planning, a programme designed to provide students with an understanding of contemporary debates in global urban development theory and practice, and to equip them with specialist skills to identify sustainable urban development planning solutions in the international context.

Successful careers

The future employment prospects of Planning and Landscape graduates continue to be buoyant. Students on the MPlan are either already in work or go on to successful careers in planning both in the public and the private sector. The MA in Urban and Regional Development similarly offers good employment prospects in a rapidly growing and diverse job market. Graduates of the MA in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management have obtained EIA or environmental management positions in the water, energy and industrial sectors, whilst others have gone onto jobs in environmental consultancy.

A growing number of graduates have continued their studies by undertaking PhD degrees at Manchester and other leading research universities in the UK and overseas.
