About Planning
The University of Manchester has a long and proud tradition of planning studies, offering its first course in town planning to architecture undergraduates as long ago as 1919.
Since 2007 we have enjoyed the benefits of merging with the disciplines of geography, architecture and development studies to form the School of Environment and Development (SED), based in the £30m purpose-built Arthur Lewis Building.
Configured to address the urgent topics of the 21st century, SED provides a very positive setting for a planning school.
The planning discipline has a strong orientation to practice and has strong professional links with communities and companies, especially in north-west England. Planning at Manchester has a friendly ethos, strong identity and a wide-reaching alumnus-network.
