Teaching and Learning Philosophy
Programmes within the MGID group draw upon a wide range of learning strategies and styles. This is because different subjects and topics lend themselves to different methods, and variety is itself enlivening. This allows study fellows to:
- Express their overall abilities more effectively.
- Have the opportunity to learn from each others' diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Develop a 'learning to learn' capacity in a range of situations
In addition to lectures, tutorials and seminars study fellows typically participate in team work and role-play exercises, analyse text and video based case studies, attend field visits, prepare and give presentations, and write reports.
Assessment is equally varied, typically involving a mixture of essays, reports and formal examinations, dependent on the aims and objectives of the specific Programme.
Our teaching, learning and assessment strategies are constantly being reviewed and improved upon. Whilst there is, of course, an ongoing desire to improve the theoretical and academic rigour of our Programmes and research we are also concerned to make our Programmes practically relevant to management and human resource practitioners in the development field and to this end we also develop relevant professional and transferable skills.
All members of the MGD group support and actively promote a 'learner centred' approach to teaching and learning on both our academic and professional development Programmes and endeavour to offer a supportive but challenging learning environment for our Study Fellows.
