Source: Interviews, Indian Dept. of Electronics annual reports, Dataquest (India) surveys.

Note: first ever exports were recorded in 1974.

Note: average annual growth rate for ten years from 1996/7 to 2006/7 is 37%.

Note: figures represent the total for packaged software + customised software + turnkey projects + consulting/other software services. Figures do not include back-office processing exports (estimated at: US$3.52bn (2003/4); US$5.03bn (2004/5); US$6.3bn (2005/6); US$8.5bn (2006/7).

Note: figures represent gross foreign exchange earnings. Net earnings (less outflow of foreign exchange from India to pay for travel and living allowances of Indian software workers who undertake their contracts overseas, marketing, multinational profit repatriation, importation of hardware and software) are estimated to be around 35% of the gross figures. Further analysis and discussion can be found in Chapter 3 of the book India's Software Industry.
