Introduction

Sunshine over a field

Research on environment and development is rooted in critical analysis of the relationship of rural livelihoods with sustainable use and conservation of natural resources in developing countries.

This is located within a broader analysis of the political economy of management of natural resources in developing countries.

Recent Work

The group’s recent work has spanned large-scale extractive industry in the Andes, the increasing role of commoditization in environmental conservation, and particularly in the expansion of ‘protected areas’, and constraints to the improvement of agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa.

It is also concerned with other aspects of commoditization of the environment, such as waste ‘value chains’.

Partners and Funding

The group has been successful in attracting funding from ESRC and from DFID, including an ESRC Professorial Fellowship, an ESRC mid-career Fellowship, an ESRC-DFID research grant, and funding for four post-doctoral fellows over the past five years.

The Group currently has twelve PhD students undertaking research associated with its programme.
