IDPM Research Centres

IDPM hosts several major centres for research in key areas of development policy, each of which has established links with governments, multilateral agencies, NGOs and other distinguished research institutions.

Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI)

Chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz and funded by the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation, BWPI is a multidisciplinary centre of global excellence researching poverty, poverty reduction, inequality, and growth.

Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre (ESID)

ESID is a DfID-funded research consortium tasked with undertaking research on policies and programmes that have been successful in reducing extreme forms of poverty in specific policy areas, chosen from growth and employment, basic services, social protection, access to justice and natural resource governance.

Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC)

CPRC is an international partnership of universities, research institutes and NGOs, initially funded by the Department for International Development, to create knowledge that contributes to both the speed and quality of poverty reduction, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Global Urban Research Centre (GURC)

Initially funded by the University’s Strategic Investment Fund, GURC conducts research critical urban transformations to inform urban development debates and influence policy and practice.

Improving Institutions for Pro-Poor Growth (IPPG) Programme  

A DfID-funded project focusing on the matrix of interactions between economic, political, social and cultural institutions and the way these either enhance or constrain pro-poor growth.

Centre for Development Informatics (CDI)

CDI is a multidisciplinary centre researching the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in socio-economic development.

Centre for Organisations in Development (COD)

COD is an interdisciplinary centre within the University of Manchester. Members of COD research organisational and management issues within the context of international development.

Centre on Regulation and Competition (CRC)

CRC was a multidisciplinary research centre engaging in research and capacity building to improve regulation and competition in developing countries. The scope of its work covered economic regulation, competition policy and regulatory governance including regulatory impact assessment.

The Global Poverty Research Group (GPRG)

GPRG was an ESRC funded collaboration between the Universities of Manchester and Oxford to conduct research on poverty and well-being in developing countries, with an emphasis on encouraging multi-disciplinary analytical and methodological approaches. 

Impact Assessment Research Centre (IARC)  

IARC specialised in the integrated assessment of the economic, social and environmental impacts on sustainable development of national, regional and international policies; its multidisciplinary research aimed to promote knowledge and practice of impact assessment.
