Old age poverty in South Africa: Household responses to social transfer receipts.
Supervisor: Armando Barrientos
Research interests
- the linkages between social policies and demographic outcomes,
- policies addressing poverty, inequality and population ageing in developing and developed countries.
Julia is the recipient of a +3 ESRC studentship attached to a project entitled 'Ageing, Wellbeing and Development: a comparative analysis of South Africa and Brazil' which is being funded by the New Dynamics of Ageing cross-council programme.
Her research aims to assess the impact of social transfers on household and intra-household dynamics in older person households in developing countries. Julia is using qualitative and quantitative methods with a strong longitudinal component to analyse changes over time in specific regions South Africa, both rural and urban, which she will then compare. It is hoped that the findings from this research will contribute to the facilitation of better informed policies aimed at managing simultaneous economic development and population ageing.
