Research profile

Corporate governance of financial institutions is demanding priority attention in the wake of rapid financial liberalization and globalization of financial services. Amongst them, banks need urgent consideration due to their unique firm specific features and vital role in the financial and economic development of developing countries. This study attempts to explore the Corporate Governance systems and institutions in the Ghanaian Banking Sector. The study draws on the experiences of pre and post liberalisation to provide an insight into the corporate governance practices of the banking institutions in Ghana

Irrespective of the widespread financial sector reforms, corporate governance system and institutions are far behind the poor performance of the banking sector in the developing economies, especially the sub-Saharan Africa. Ghana like-wise has adopted wide-spread financial sector reform programme which spark competition in banking sectors by removing various regulatory barriers such as entry, interest rate, and asset choice. It is however on record that the foreign/private banks comparatively performed well over the sector reform period which leads to a question on different practices of the corporate governance system and institutions in the banking sector, and their possible impact on the performance of public banks.

The need to understand the governance problem posed by the new regulated banks and also evaluation of the nature of outdated (long existing) governance institutions is now urgent than ever. It is again crucial to indicate that, the new governance challenge introduced by the sector liberalization, need the necessary institutional adjustment to have the expected positive impact on national economic development. The findings of the study will identify possible potential gaps in the system of corporate governance in the Ghanaian Banking Sector institutions.
