Prof Tony Bebbington Awarded AAG CAPE Robert McC. Netting Honor

SED and IDPM are pleased to announce that Professor Anthony Bebbington was recently awarded a prestigious award by a special commission of the Cultural and Political Ecology (CAPE) specialty group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).

The Robert McC.Netting Award is the highest recognition awarded by CAPE and is awarded to scholars in cultural and political ecology who have distinguished themselves through involvement with interdisciplinary geographical and anthropological projects, and/or have published extensively in both anthropological and geographical journals, and/or whose work is read and appreciated by practitioners in both fields, and/or whose service to both disciplines is meritorious.

The author of Dr. Bebbington’s nominating letter wrote:

"Bebbington has been pivotal in demarcating an intellectual position that merges science, social theory, and practice regarding environment and development, especially in regard to the Andean realm. […] *Conceptually,*he has demonstrated the synergy among social movements, NGOs, and civil society that gives rise to human-environment conditions and their change. In so doing, he demonstrated how materialist and post-structural approaches can be bridged in this synergy. […] He is the newest elected geographer to the National Academy of Sciences. Discussion within the NAS concerning Dr. Bebbington’s case revealed that his research and practice has had impacts well beyond the traditional CAPE communities, reaching those addressing institutional dynamics in political science and agricultural development in agronomy. His election represents that of the first geographer resonating with the social theory side and environment development practitioner side of CAPE studies".
