HAVANA AND ENVIRONS: Architecture of Havana

The Bicardi Building
Although Havana is perhaps most famous for the colonial Spanish architecture of Old Havana, the different parts of the city have other distinctive architectures reflecting the values of different historical periods. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, for example, Havana's architects embraced the modern styles emanating from Europe and the United States. Housing built by Havana's growing numbers of middle class residents in the early part of the 20th century reflected the different histories of the city with neocolonial, medieval and Art Nouveau styles along side one another (see Modernism or Art Nouveau in the Havana architecture).
Cuba faces some very particular problems in balancing the demands of preservation [PDF], tourism and residents.
