Geography
Part of the School of Environment and Development (SED)

Introduction

Geography is a unique discipline that bridges the arts and sciences. It is both a practical and theoretical subject that helps us to understand global and local issues. Its breadth opens a wide range of career opportunities for its students. Indeed, Geography has one of the best graduate employment records in the country because it provides students with a range of transferable skills for later life including literacy, numeracy, computer literacy, graphicacy and communication skills.

Studying Geography at Manchester

We offer degree courses in Geography (BA and BSc), Geography & Archaeology and Geography & Geology, as well as contributing to programmes in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science.

We structure our courses around the three strands of the discipline: Human Geography, People and Environment and Physical Geography. We recognise, however, that while some may want to maintain this breadth, others may want to specialise in particular aspects of the subject, and hence we offer an increasing degree of choice in lecture courses from the second semester of the first year onwards.

We have a well-established practice of innovation in teaching. We think it is important to provide a broad education in geography while also providing you with the opportunity to develop skills for employment and your future career. We have an integrated programme of small group work throughout the three years that includes tutorials, communication skills, team projects, practicals and laboratory classes. This small group work allows you to develop and explore your own ideas but it also provides you with a way of getting to know staff and other students. This process is further enhanced by the diversity and frequency of fieldwork, which culminates in the second year overseas field courses. Current destinations include Amsterdam, Ireland, New York, Crete, Cuba and Southern Spain.
