A multisensor approach to monitor moorland fires and post fire impact for the Peak District National Park
Supervisors: Julia McMorrow and Prof. Clive Agnew.
Research interests
Fire Risk Management in UK Moorlands, Radar Remote Sensing, GIS, OGC Web Services and Data Interoperability.
My research is in collaboration with Mimas and the School of Environment and Development (SED). The focus is to developing a spatial and temporal model of wildfire risk and impact assessment using both optical and radar remotely sensed data for the Peak District National Park (PDNP). Key study areas include Bleaklow and Kinder which experienced large fires on 18 April 2003.
Key questions to be addressed are: -
- Who are the main stakeholders and what are their requirements for monitoring fire activity and recovery in the PDNP?
- What satellite data is available for monitoring the PDNP and how effective is the data for detecting fire scars and monitoring recovery in Moorland environments?
- What are the factors affecting fire risk?
- What is the rate of recovery of fire scars in Moorland environments?
Current Employment
Geodata Services Development Officer, Mimas (2005 – Present).
Previous Employment
GIS Scientist Internship, United States Geological Survey (2004 – 2005).
