Geography postgraduate

Postgraduate studies in Geography

Our postgraduate courses in Geography are integrated into our overall research ethos, which aims to produce both theoretical and policy-relevant contributions to geographical knowledge.

We offer a range of postgraduate opportunities, including:

We build our taught Masters degrees around broad areas within geography on which a number of staff within Geography are active researchers and on which our research combines with policy applications.

On the human geography side, Manchester has a strong reputation in the areas of economic geography, urban geography and health geography, and on the physical geography side we have a long tradition of research in the areas of environmental change, geomorphology and human-environment interactions.

We currently supervise almost 40 research students, who are funded by the EPSRC and ESRC, among others. Our staff and students benefit from interactions with the 45 other academics and 100 other PhD students in SED. We offer broad-based and flexible research training for our doctoral students. Recent graduates have gone to take senior positions in the UK’s Food Ethics Council, the Institute of Public Policy Research (based in London), and various arms of local and national government worldwide.
