About Geography
The University of Manchester is one of the UK's leading centres for geographical research. Over the last five years we have expanded our international research capacities in Geographical Political Economy and Environmental Processes, built the core of international-quality research in Quaternary Environments and Geoarchaeology, and laid foundations for a new research grouping in Space, Culture and Society. Fifteen new appointments including landmark appointments of highly productive, senior scholars have contributed to a vibrant scholarly environment, an expansion in research income, and growth in the number of post-graduates, and we anticipate further development over the next couple of years.
Research by Manchester geographers sets national and international research agendas in human and physical geography: around half our staff, for example, hold editorial or editorial board positions in leading international journals in Geography and cognate fields, including the editorship of Antipode and Progress in Human Geography, and specialist journals in physical geography and geoscience, Geoarchaeology and The Journal of the Geological Society.
Since 2004 Geography has been part of the new, interdisciplinary School of Environment and Development (SED) integrating Geography with other established research centres in development studies, planning and architecture. In 2007 Geography re-located with the other units of SED to the Arthur Lewis Building, a £30 million purpose-built building at the heart of the University campus.
