Dr Matthias Vom Hau Awarded SSRC Book Fellowship

BWPI Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Matthias Vom Hau has been awarded a 2010 Book Fellowship by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).

The award is aimed at supporting the completion of a book manuscript on nationalism in Latin America, and includes, among other things, sponsorship for a workshop with editors from various university presses , and extensive editorial support by a professional editor.

The manuscript, entitled 'Contested Inclusion: Transformations of Nationalism in Mexico, Argentina, and Peru', represents one of the first efforts systematically to compare different forms of nationalism in Latin America, through a comparative-historical analysis of changes in official national discourses in these countries during the mid-20th century. The manuscript also provides a new theoretical framework and a corrective to the relative absence of theories that explain the temporal trajectories of nationalism—as opposed to its emergence.

Vom Hau is a Lewis-Gluckman Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Brooks World Poverty Institute. He holds a PhD (2007) and MA (2001) from Brown University.
