Barcelona: The Challenge of Celebrity

A lecture by Oriol Nel.lo

Oriol Nello

Oriol Nel.lo, SED Visiting Professorial Fellow in March 2011, is Professor of Urban Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Also a politician, he served from December 2003 as Secretary for Spatial Planning in the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, playing a leading role in land policy, neighbourhood regeneration, transport initiatives, and the long-awaited strategy for the vast metropolitan region around Barcelona.

As part of his visit Prof Nello will give a special guest lecture on the challenges faced by Barcelona due to its iconic status among world cities.

From the triumphs of the 1992 Olympics, to the neighbourhood law (Llei de Barris) of 2004 and last year's metropolitan strategy (Plan Territorial Metropolitano de Barcelona), the city has been on the leading edge of policy innovation.

In his lecture, Professor Nello will reflect on the challenges of progressive urbanism and the lessons that Greater Barcelona has to offer in this respect.
