'One Planet City' Research from the Centre for Urban Regional Ecology Featured in The Guardian and the Manchester International Festival

Joe Ravetz of CURE presented current research to the Manchester Report - a high level panel and public showcase organized by the Guardian Media Group on 4th July 2009. The results were published as a Guardian feature, and will be taken to the Copenhagen International Climate Change Conference.

'One Planet City' is a project that aims at major reductions in the carbon footprint of Greater Manchester, and in the process develop tools and systems for wider use. A key part of the plan is the "carbon mortgage", a financial mechanism enabling individuals and families to increase their energy efficiency at zero upfront cost.

Joe Ravetz estimates that the scheme could re-engineer 75% of Greater Manchester's homes to "the highest feasible" efficiency levels within two decades, saving £330m and 7.4m tonnes of CO2 per year.
