University RAE results published

The School is delighted with the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). All areas of research show significant growth and increased quality with Development Studies (IDPM) ranked number one in this field based upon research power.

The School entered 77 staff and the RAE assessed two thirds of their research activity to be at the level of international excellence, with 20% judged to be world leading.

IDPM ranked first for development research in UK based on research power

IDPM research is assessed as ‘world-class’, and in significant areas is viewed as ‘world-leading’.  This means that not only is IDPM contributing at a global level to debates about poverty and development, but in many areas is setting the pace.

With the government having previously awarded its highest possible rating for the quality of IDPM’s postgraduate teaching, IDPM has now achieved national recognition as the UK’s leading centre for development research and teaching.

Manchester research success: Excellent 2008 RAE results for Planning

The RAE has shown Manchester to be amongst the very top Planning and Architecture schools in the country. 20% of Planning and Architecture research at Manchester was judged to be of the highest world-leading quality (4*), and a further 40% deemed internationally excellent (3*), placing Manchester sixth of 26 universities (according to Grade Point Average).

Geography Research judged Internationally Excellent

Two thirds (65%) of Geography Research Activity has been graded as internationally excellent or above in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.  This places the discipline in the top third of all geography departments in the UK and, for a department of our size, at the forefront of research excellence.
